Dear Mom,

You are my favourite person this week.  Seriously.  You can do no wrong.  Oh sure, a few times I’ve thrown a nasty fit for what you thought was no reason, but really I was just keeping you on your toes.  I can’t let you get too used to me being good, happy, and smiling!

But really, I am happy.  The dogs make me smile.  Sophie the Giraffe makes me smile.  Singing, dancing, and talking with you all make me smile.  I’ve finally figured out this ‘laughing’ thing that you seem to love so much, and it makes you and Daddy laugh too, so that’s even better.

Almost every day this week we’ve gone for a walk, and it’s so nice.  Remember when we went to the park and watched those big boys and girls play on the jungle gym?  That was so exciting.  I can’t wait until I can do that.  Then you sat on a swing with me in your lap and THAT was even BETTER!

This growing up thing is cool!  Now to discover how to escape the Bumbo…

Love,
Maia.

Dear Mom,

Shouldn’t you be cooking instead of taking pictures of me?

I know, you’re super impressed that my hands are clasped together.  THAT’S CRAZY! HOW AM I DOING THAT?  Next thing you know, cats will be sleeping with dogs!

Really though, I copied it from you.  Remember the other day when we were sitting on the couch together and you kept bringing your hands together, trying to show me how to do this?  I caught on, I just didn’t want to let you know then.  Gotta keep you on your toes.  It’s cute though, huh?

I have to admit, I love spending time in the kitchen with you.  I love watching you walk back and forth, I love that you show me every ingredient and tell me what it is, and I love that you talk to me about what you are doing.  Someday we will be able to cook together!  You’ll have to show me how to make cookies, since they are Daddy’s favourite.

Love,
Maia.

HEY MOM!
Check out this sweet new trick Daddy taught me.  That’s right, now I can let you know what I think of you in ways other than making stinkfaces.  Even better, you seem to think this is absolutely hilarious, then you wave your tongue all over the place and look silly.  See Mom, there’s the difference between us: I’m cute, you’re old.  I’ve got cool hair, you’ve got frizzy.

Oh, except for when you brush my hair ALL OVER THE PLACE like I’m some sort of 80s punk rocker:

And then put a clip right in the front:

It’s not fair.  I don’t do this kinda stuff to you!  Just you wait until the first time you let me play hairdresser with you.  Daddy doesn’t have any hair, so you can’t fob it off on him, and the dogs are short-haired, so you can’t distract me with them. I’m looking forward to it.

Love,
Maia.

Dear Mom,

This has been a great week.  I’m surprised you managed to take a picture of me where I wasn’t blowing raspberries and I don’t have drool all around my lips.  I guess I need to try harder!

As you can see, I’ve learned how to roll over onto my belly.  This is especially fun to do when you have me on the changing table.  I like to roll to my right as if I’m trying to fall off the table and watch you scramble, then when you straighten me out, I roll over to my left side, kick the baby powder bottle off the table, and flip to my stomach while you pick it up.  You laugh and laugh, so I figure this is actually pretty cool of me.

I have to ask, though — what’s up with you putting milk on my bum?  I mean, seriously?  You say there’s some sort of rash or something there, but… I thought milk was for drinking.  You are so confusing sometimes.

This rolling around thing is great, though.  For awhile there I couldn’t get my arm out from under my body, but now I know how to push myself up on my knees for a second so I can tug it out.  Hey, I wonder what happens if I keep my knees under me for longer…

Hmm.

Love,
Maia.

Hey Mom,

So there I was at the graduation reception, hanging out with Becky and Uncle Jared, when you came wandering out of the cabin with a Smirnoff Ice in one hand and that camera in the other (like always; do you ever put that thing down?).  See the face I’m making in this picture?  It’s because I suspect you’re about to steal me from Becky’s lap, but really, I’m perfectly happy here.  Uncle Jared put little white flowers in my hair!  He even checked them for ketchup bugs, and I learned what a ketchup bug is.

It’s pretty amazing, you know, what a great day we had on Sunday, even if some of it was terrifying.  I made sure to wake up nice and early so you and Daddy could make it down to Hartford for Aunt Katie’s graduation in time, even though you tried to pull the blankets over your head and ignore us.  Then, once we got there, I sat in Daddy’s lap all quietly, looking at all the people and lights.

But then…. THAT SOUND started, and it scared me.  What are “bagpipes” and how does anyone listen to them?!  I tried to let everyone in the stadium know how much I hate the “bagpipes”, but they were so loud that only you and Daddy and Babcia noticed me crying.

You know what, though?  All the clapping and cheering during the rest of the thing didn’t bother me, and I got to take a nice nap wrapped up in a blanket in your arms.  Of course, then everyone around me started to scream and holler when Aunt Katie was called, and I didn’t like that any better than the bagpipes.  What is wrong with you people?  Don’t you ever think about me?  There’s so much new stuff being put in front of me all the time, you’re always taking me new places and showing me new people.  I really really try to be good.

And, going back to how cool it was to hang out with Becky and Jared, you were good too.  You left me there with them until I was ready to leave.  Maybe you’re not so terrible after all.

Love,
Maia.

Dear Mom,

What were you thinking when you let Daddy have the hairbrush?  Didn’t you know he was going to abuse the privilege of brushing my lovely locks?  You had my hair done so nicely, then you turned your back on us for thirty seconds and POW… I’m wailing in protest!  When you turned around to see what was going on — YOU STARTED TO LAUGH.  How could you laugh? Can’t you see how absolutely appalling it is that he made me look like this?

And then you reached for the camera.  Why?  Why must you have recorded this moment for posterity?  Are you going to pull this picture out when I bring home my first boyfriend? LOOK AT HOW ANGRY I AM at seeing the camera!

Bah.  You hate me.  You both hate me.  I’m going to scream in your ear for a few hours one night, and you won’t know why… but believe me, I will.  And this picture is why.

Also, I’m going to poop on you.

I’m outtie.

This idea’s been kicking around in my brain for a few weeks now, in particular when I took the pictures in the “I feel ambivalent about this chapeau, mother” series of Maia.  I wonder what she’s thinking and what she’d say to me if she were a more eloquent creature.

So, welcome to my little meme, which you are all MORE than welcome to participate in:

All you need to do is type up some sort of entry that explores your child’s state of mind.  If you could get into that brain, what would it be thinking?  (If you have teenagers… you might not even want to know!)  Copy and paste the HTML code below to grab the button, which will link back here. Hi Mom,

Yesterday was Mother’s Day, and since every day is Maia’s day, I decided to be nicer than usual to you.  I mean, I’m only twelve weeks old, and while I love you and all, that means I can’t do a whole lot other than take a long nap in the afternoon and then at dinner time too.  I know you like the books I got you — one was about mommies and babies and the other one was about numbers — which is probably why you read them BOTH to me as we laid in bed together.

The lady at the Japanese restaurant that Daddy took you to for dinner was so nice!  That’s why I showed her my biggest smile, and when she said I would be prettiest 100 days after my birthday, I expected you to know exactly what day that is.  From the way you looked at me and said “Oh really?  That’s nifty,” I think you didn’t.  Have you counted it out on the calendar yet?  Do you need to read that numbers book with me some more?

Daddy’s working this week, so last night you and me slept in my bedroom.  I LOVE my bedroom!  There are so many fun stuffed animals in my crib, and the whole room is so bright and colourful.

Anyhow, that’s all for now.  My belly’s starting to feel grumbly and you looking like you’re about to eat dinner or hop in the shower or something else that you want to do, so I think it’s about time to make sure you’re paying attention to me!

xoxo,
Maia
