Gerber 8 Grains & Yogurt Cereal

by Tatiana on September 21, 2009

Although we’re generally doing baby-led solids around here, once in awhile I enjoy feeding Maia with a spoon, or passing her a spoon and watching her try to feed herself.  So when I was contacted with an offer to review Gerber’s 8 Grains & Yogurt Cereal, I decided to give it a try — especially since our family doctor had recently mentioned that I shouldn’t worry about introducing a variety of grains to Maia’s diet.

Within ten days, a package the size of a clothing box had arrived.  I was kind of scared — I mean, how dang much cereal must be in that box?  As it turns out, three 7 ounce boxes were inside… and this:

(The teddy bear, not the baby!)

Seriously, how awesome is that? Kristin, the PR rep I was in contact with, is super smart for sending along a teddy bear for my little lady to play with, which she’s pretty much guaranteed to love, and she totally gets an immediate thumbs up from me (yes, I’m easy. Yes, I’m pretty sure I’ve mentioned that in every other review so far.)  The teddy bear has a bunch of little patches of different colours, shapes, and textures on him, and a rattle inside.

Anyhow, I was asked to review the cereal, not the teddy bear, right?  So the next morning, for breakfast, I tossed Maia into her little HO! HO! HO! bib (tis always the season around here) (this was before I learned of the beauty that is plastic bibs with little catchers mitts at the bottom), prepared some of the cereal with water to a fairly lumpy consistency, microwaved it for twenty seconds, and tried it out myself.  Why? Because I don’t feed my baby anything that I wouldn’t eat.  It tasted bland, but with a subtle fruity aftertaste that I  figured she’d like.

At the first bite, she cringed and kind of smacked her lips together in uncertainty… then swallowed and leaned forward with her mouth open, wanting more.  After a bite or two, she grabbed for the spoon, and a few minutes later we had this:

DSCN2365aThe best part?  IMMEDIATELY after this picture, that hand with the spoon went straight into her hair.  And shortly thereafter, I had her in the bath.  Lesson learned: if baby is going to feed herself, KEEP HER HAIR OUT OF HER DAMNED FACE.  Right.  Obvious.  All you other moms out there are totally laughing at me over that one, I know.

Overall, that day, I considered the cereal to be a minor success, nothing great but nothing to toss in the garbage, either.  At the very least, she could learn how to use a spoon by eating it.

Gerber 8 Grains & Yogurt nutritional informationThe next morning, I tossed a tablespoon of orange juice into the cereal and enough lukewarm water to make it a bit more creamy in consistency, and warmed it for only 15 seconds.  THIS went over huge!  She had no interest in trying to grab the spoon, just kept gobbling the cereal down and leaning forward for more.  When the bowl was empty, she was still hungry, so I prepared more!

For the last several mornings now, she’s eaten this cereal for breakfast.  Sometimes I feed her, other times she feeds herself; we’ve used orange juice, apple juice, breast milk, and water in various combinations to alter the consistency, and all of them have been really successful.  She’s always so happy to see me sit down with the bowl of cereal.  I think that when we get through all three boxes, we’ll move on to more “solid” breakfasts like we have for other meals of the day, but I’ll keep a box on hand for those mornings when I have fruit on hand that is begging to be mixed in with hot, creamy cereal.

Gerber 8 Grains & Yogurt cereal is made with 8 natural grains: wheat, barley, rye, corn, sorghum, rice, oat, and millet.  We definitely used more than two tablespoons per serving.

Follow-up: Little Alouette Giraffe Teether

by Tatiana on September 2, 2009

I touched base with Amy, owner of Little Alouette, about the teether yesterday.  She addressed all of my concerns and I have to say, I’m feeling pretty sheepish for a few reasons:

1) In the future, before posting a review of an item produced by a small business, I’m going straight to the owner first with my concerns and thoughts.
2) GiGi’s ears ARE rounded, not sharp; I just freaked out at the sight of blood and didn’t inspect the toy well.
3) Of course wood isn’t going to hurt Maia’s teeth any more than hard plastic or a frozen teething toy.
4) Maia, who has her first tooth coming in, PUT DOWN WATERMELON TODAY to pick up GiGi and chew on her.  Those of you who have seen me rhapsodizing on Twitter about how much my daughter loves watermelon should pick your jaws up off the floor.

But you know what I’m happy about?

LITTLE ALOUETTE’S CUSTOMER SERVICE IS STILL AWESOME.

So not only did we get a GiGi made just for us, and hearts drawn on our envelope, but now I’ve gotten a long letter from the owner responding to my thoughts and concerns about her product.  I’m totally thrilled by this.

Like I wrote in my review, I do like the product, I like the business, and I like how natural and environmentally-friendly the toy is.  So if you’re looking for an all-natural, wooden toy, rattle, or teether for your baby, or as a gift, I recommend Little Alouette.  And rest assured that if you have any questions, comments, or concerns about their products, the owner will give you the personalized attention you deserve!

Little Alouette Giraffe Teether

by Tatiana on September 1, 2009

DSCN2285aDuring the BlogHer@Home festivities, one of the two prizes I entered to win was a cute wooden teether from Little Alouette (the other was a netbook).  I was lucky enough to win the teether, and I requested one shaped like a giraffe, since one of Maia’s favourite toys is a rubber teething giraffe and I thought it’d be cute to continue along on the same theme.  As it turned out, Little Alouette’s owner was heading out of town and didn’t have any giraffes on hand, so when she returned from vacation she created a giraffe just for us (AWESOME!) and sent it out.

I smiled when the envelope arrived: she had drawn a few hearts on the back, and a big one on the back with “Blogher at Home” written in the middle.  I thought that was just really sweet.

GiGi the giraffe is beautifully made and smooth, but that smoothness does not come from a slick polish — rather from natural flax seed oil that is used to finish Little Alouette products.  Maia immediately wanted to hold GiGi and chew on it, and it held her attention for awhile.  She was still playing with it off and on when Chris came home, but as he and I sat on the couch talking about our day, Maia toppled over and fell on GiGi.  The one point on the toy that is not entirely rounded, the ear, caught her on her lip and cut it.  Wounds on the mouth bleed heavily, and I admit, I totally freaked out to see blood smeared across her cheek.  GiGi was immediately tucked away.

Recently, since Maia’s movements have grown more steady, we’ve brought GiGi out again to play with.  I have to admit, I’m not really sure how I feel about this toy.  I think it’s lovely, I like that it has the hole in the centre so Maia can hold it easily, I like that it’s all-natural, but I can’t get past the fact that it’s WOOD.  And therefore HARD.  Now that she has a tooth coming in, I really worry about her chewing on something wooden.  Will it chip her tooth? If she bites down too hard, will it push her tooth out of the socket?  I’m not sure.  I think I’m planning on taking GiGi away again for awhile.

The good news, though, is that when she’s old enough to make up stories about her toys, she’ll have two giraffes to play with!  I wonder what sorts of adventures they’ll share with her.

Pros:
- Beautiful, hand-made, all-natural item
- Lots of variety available in the shapes
- Not an obvious teething/baby toy, so can grow into a childhood plaything
- I appreciate the personal attention from the owner

Cons:
- On the first day of owning it, baby injured herself with it
- Not sure how I feel about my baby gnawing on a piece of wood

Please note:
This product was not sent to me for review and I was not asked to write this review.  I just feel a little conflicted about GiGi and wanted to share my thoughts!

Baby’s First Journal by Glowbaby

by Tatiana on August 24, 2009

DSCN1973Baby’s First Journal by Glow Baby is a cute little 7.5″x5.5″ spiral-bound notebook that offers a way to keep track of baby’s growth, feedings, diaper changes, sleep, vitamin use, baths, and offers space for any other notes you might want to take.  I was really pleased when Lindsay, the owner of Glow Baby, contacted me and I found out that she’s Canadian.  I love reviewing products from Canada!

The first thing that struck me upon receiving Baby’s First Journal was the packaging:

DSCN1972

I know, right?  SO DAMNED CUTE.  I love unwrapping things, and I’m one of those people who is meticulous with unwrapping — no ripping apart paper and throwing around ribbons for me! — so I quite enjoyed that Baby’s First Journal arrived all bound up and prettified.  Yes, I can be easy to please.

Inside the front cover is a little “Introduction” page.  Although I had read about Glow Baby on the company’s website already, I found it really charming to have an introduction to Lindsay, her reasons for starting her company, and the motivation behind this product all right there in my hands.  It felt really personal.  And at the back cover is a page for Contacts, which is really thoughtful.

I requested the journal in green, although it also comes in pink and blue.  Each page has a space for the date, columns to be filled out for Breastfeeding, Bottle feeding, Diaper, and Sleep, as well as check boxes for Daily Vitamin and Bath, and a space for notes:

DSCN1975I appreciated the little checkbox for “Bath”.  I know, a silly thing to highlight, but honestly? Sometimes I forget which days Maia’s had a bath and which she hasn’t.

Now, shortly after Baby’s First Journal arrived, my husband and I discussed how best to use it.  Was it meant to be used chronologically — that is, filling out the feeding/diaper columns as things that happen between sleep times — or meant to be used just for tracking — so each column and space stands as its own record?  The sample page Lindsay has filled out at the front would indicate the latter, but I argued for the former, and I won’t lie, Chris and I got into a ridiculously heated argument over it.  However, fortunately, Baby’s First Journal was at hand, so I beat him down with it and made him shut up.

(Seriously? Somewhere, Lindsay is wondering, “What kind of psycho did I send this book to?”)

Related to using Baby’s First Journal for things it’s not intended for, the paper is acid-free.  This means that when Maia chewed on it, BECAUSE SHE DID, I didn’t have to worry about her poisoning herself, which is pretty nice.

Anyhow, I enjoyed having this product around. I like putting pen to paper — I think it’s a very sensual experience, something that’s kind of becoming forgotten.  And Baby’s First Journal would make a great baby shower gift, whether for a first-time mom or a mom who’s been there before.  Its size allows for easy packing, the spiral binding is sturdy and wide enough to tuck a pen into, and it’s just altogether cute.

I must admit, though, that I would have gotten a lot more use out of this product in the early days of having Maia around, when I was more sleep-deprived and uncertain.  When I received Baby’s First Journal she was just over five months old.  As a work-at-home mom, I find that our days have a natural rhythm to them and I rarely need to ask myself “When did she last eat? What side did she eat from?  How many diapers has she soiled?”

I absolutely recommend Baby’s First Journal by Glow Baby as an organizational tool and a great gift for new parents.

Pros:
- Really well put-together and laid out
- Would make a great gift
- Acid-free paper, if your baby decides she needs something to chew on.
- Comes in three colours
- Small, Canadian mom-owned business
- Great size for tucking into a diaper bag

Cons:
- Messy/ugly to correct your mistakes
- Not immediately obvious how to the columns are intended to be used
- I would have liked hard covers, to make it easier to write on

Baby Activity Logger by Nerdtown

by Tatiana on August 10, 2009

baby_activity_loggerBaby Activity Logger by Nerdtown is an app for the iPhone and iPod Touch that allows you to track all sorts of stats about your baby (or babies, as the case may be!). Feeding, Diaper Change, Track Other Actions (Spat Up/Burped/Something Else), and Sleep Cycle are your four main options when you first open the app.

When Aaron from Nerdtown contacted me via email to ask me to review Baby Activity Logger, he offered me a code for a free download.  Well, this was the first time we had ever looked at an app that costs money, and we accidentally ended up paying for it, but I must say: This app is well worth purchasing.

My husband, Chris, particularly enjoyed Baby Activity Logger.  The fact that everything can be tracked (the “something else” option allows you to enter whatever you want), edited, and annotated really appealed to his geeky side.  Whenever I would sit down to nurse the baby, I’d holler: “Chris!  Left breast, left breast!”  In fact, I think that for the first several days of testing, he hardly let me have the iPod because he wanted to track everything!

For myself, I think the app is really fun and useful.  I would have liked to have it when Maia was born and I was more concerned about her feedings, diaper changes, and sleep patterns, because at this point, I’m so laid-back about it all (mostly) that keeping track of it was actually hard to remember to do.  Most of the time I’d end up opening the app after I’d nursed her or she’d slept, and entering an approximate start time and length.  This is definitely a strength of the app.  I appreciated that I could edit start and end times for activities.

Something else fun about Baby Activity Logger is that it is integrated with e-mail.  This means you can send yourself (or any email address) a PDF or CSV report of what your baby has done for the day (here’s a PDF report of Maia’s activities on July 28th). It’s also integrated with Twitter, so you can set it to automatically tweet to your account when you enter an activity:

baby_activity_logger_tweetPretty funny, but not useful to me at all.  Maybe if you had a separate Twitter account set up just for tracking your baby’s activities this would be a useful feature, but I’m not sure why you’d do that.

Pros:
- For us, it let Dad take a more active role in parenting.
- You can enter EVERYTHING, and it’s all in chronological order.
- Very easy to use.
- Very easy to correct mistakes or fill in information after the fact.
- Designed to allow for tracking multiple children.
- Several ways to track, report, and analyze the data collected.

Cons:
- The app is called “blogger”, which meant I overlooked it a few times when browsing apps by name.  Admittedly, the icon is a picture of a cute, cartoony little baby face, so when I browse by icon, it’s easily noticeable.
- Only for the iPhone / iPod Touch
- Difficult to give as a gift
- Sleep doesn’t roll over into a new day.  If baby sleeps from day one into day two, the sleep is all recorded under day one.

Now, for my readers:
Interested in obtaining a copy of Baby Activity Logger for your iPhone or iPod Touch?  I have TWO free downloads available.  You can enter by doing the following:

1) Tweet the following statement: “Win a copy of Baby Activity Logger from @nerdtown & @averygoodyear at http://bit.ly/O3OGL!”

Congratulations to @Babymomandme and @GlidingLara on winning this app!  Enjoy!
